I am not really a religious person but I enjoyed many of the stories in the Bible I learned about when at School. (My wife finds it hysterical that I can still sing virtually every word to Joseph and his Technicolored Dreamcoat.)
One story that has always really stood out for me though was that of David and Goliath. I believe this story really shares a valuable lesson with regards to self-confidence and taking control of your life.
In short, Goliath was a giant of man, head of an army and appeared to be big and scary. David on the other hand was a meek little shepherd inĀ a small little village. One day David’s little village was challenged to battle by the might of Goliath’s Army.
What should have been an easy crushing victory by Goliath turned into a shock win for David who successfully killed the giant. You might have heard the phrase “giant killing”. This story is where it comes from, when the unexpected underdog side wins, you hear it often in football here in the UK. This is where the underdog wins.
Malcolm Gladwell in his excellent book “Outliers” discusses this principal where the underdog team beats the expected winner. This normally happens when the underdog uses a strategy that no one expects. The underdog uses a strategy that takes everyone by surprise.
This is what actually happened in the story of how David beat Goliath. David did not defeat Goliath because he was stronger or had a better weapon. David won because he did something that Goliath was not expecting.
Goliath was a very successful warrior. He went into battle following the rule of war. When he approached Davids village, he went to the front to call out a member of the village to come and cross swords to officially start a battle. Goliath was standing there not expecting to fight, he was expected the official pre battle conversation.
David on the other hand was used to defeated his village, and especially his sheep from being attacked by wolves. If Wolves approached, David did not go and cross swords with them, he just picked up his weapon and attacked without warning. This is how David beat Goliath. When Goliath approached and appeared to be attacking the village, David didn’t go to talk to him, he just picked his slingshot and flung two rocks straight between Goliath’s eyes, killing him dead instantly.
This is a valuable lesson to you about self-confidence. There are so many distractions in life to stop you focusing on what you to achieve. People will put doubt in your mind that chips away at your confidence, that allows them to continue knocking you down and walking all over you as you look for approval from them by following their rules.
The thing is, you do not have to follow their rules. You have the power already by focusing on your goal and not letting anything distract you. So next time you are faced with opposition, ask yourself as you bowing to Goliath or are you going to trust yourself and be like David?
Your life is not about having low confidence, low self-esteem or having anxieties that put your stress levels through the roof.
